Weight Reduction

I wanna get rid of some excess weight on this car. I mean I checked the door and it says like 4,200lbs.!!!! Dang this thing is like a truck with a sports car suspension and body! Is that really the stock weight? Mine is a 94 Z28 btw...

I was thinking I could take out the spare tire, I know I'm screwed if I blow a tire, so I'm hesitant about that. The rear seats and seatback could be taken out but for not many lbs. saved. I'm stuck on what I can do to lower weight. I don't want to ruin the cars dynamics or use ricer methods, but there's got to be something I can do to make the car more 'efficient'...

Your car does not weigh 4,200#.... that label shows the max allowable load, including the wet weight of the car, driver, three passengers and a trunkload of crap.

Typical race weights are in the range of 3,500-3,750#, including the driver. People have managed to go as low as 3,000#, but there's not much left at that point...... .

Weight reduction is a good idea, but you need to know where you're starting. There used to be a really great thread on ls1tech.com, but unfortunately they move to a new server and the thread link doesn't seem to work any more. If you go there and search for it, you will find an extremely comprehensive list of parts you can remove, and the weights.

Take the spare out, just dont drive anywhare far without it, luckily I work and go to school close to the house so its not that big of a deal. Keep some instant tire fix stuff in your car. Other than that im not sure, but I do know that the back seats really dont weigh that much. Take your front sway bar out :P who needs it, I dont

as someone pointed out a while back, for some of us this is a great weight reduction mod:

!cheeseburgers

I don't know about you all, but I weigh in at about 260Lbs, so I could pull about .05 off my time just by losing some weight

I weighed in at 170 or so and then I purchased my car (and became a member of CZ28.com) I am not officially 235 pounds...just went downstairs and weighed in hahaha

this place makes you fat b/c instead of working out, I'm sitting here, eating food, reading a screen. (its like smoking)

One of the problems is that a lot of the high performance stuff adds weight... in my case, the roll bar (chrome moly, but still maybe 60#), TH400, Gear Vendor, Spohn TA, etc. all added weight as fast as I could remove it. With no A/C, no rear seat or belts, and reasonably light weight Weld wheels and skinnies, the Formula still weighed 3,760# with me (185#) on the Englishtown scale.

I thought I'd save weight with a 16# Corbeau Forza seat, in place of the 36# stock seat, but the "slider" mounting bracket for the Corbeau added 10# back in.

Recent removals from the 3,760# weight include:

-front bumper filler and beam
-cruise control
-front sway bar
-stock steering wheel/airbag (Grant wheel added)
-radio, speakers and antenna
-AIR pump, lines
-EGR valve

Recent additions include:

-Spohn "drag race" rear sway bar (29#, minus weight of stock stuff)
-wider slicks, and added tubes

I'm trying to remove the rear seatback, but is there a way to get it detached from the seat belts w/out cutting em? I'd really like to have it so that everything I take off can be put back on if I ever feel like it again. Any tips, or tools to use to undo the seatbelts from the seatbacks?? thnx again..

before takin weight off the car, try losing some weight YOURSELF...that's a good start...

ur car weighs about ~3500 lbs...so, relaxe....

4200 - (~600lbs) = ~3500lbs

Your engine mounts weigh a hefty 55-60pounds themselves. If you got the time, (or more importantly money) go ahead and get aftermarket ones. They are actually 20 pounds lighter and have a reported "significant" difference when accelerating on and off the track.

Just my .02

Would any of you guys beat me up if I was considering letting my Girlfriend drive my car at the track. With my time in sig, she was in the car with me, (almost got in trouble for havin a passenger with me in the 13's). to show her how to do it. If she gets the 2nd to 3rd shift down she may get another .2 off my time. My lard a$$ out, almost 200#, and with her at the wheel at about 100#, I think I,... I mean her and my Z could get around a 13.7x at 100+. Thats some cheap weight reduction
