What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

You all know the sound, that nasty, annoying "pop" sound that we get when we rev the motor up high when not in gear or when decelerating from a high RPM.

You don't hear it on old muscle and you dont hear it from a mustang either.

Just wondering why we get it with 3rd/4th gen f-bodies, is it in the motor or the exhaust?

And..... how do you get rid of it!? How do you get a nice tuned sound (like a mustang or old muscle car) not just a loud sound?

its the exhaust, and its from built up backpressure. ive timed mine perfectly to scare the living hell out of people walking...

you need a better 'free flowing' exhaust in order to get rid of it. the less restriction = the less popping there will be.

As far as I know, it's unburnt fuel. I don't think the freer flowing - less popping thing is true, because my exhaust pops alot more with the cutout open.

ive been woundering the same thing,i used a flowmaster 80 series muffler and no cat and man it pops like crazy if i rev it.it sounds real good at 65-70mph but slowing down it sounds bad and at low speeds.it sounded this way stock also but now its louder i thought it was restriction in the exaust, man i was wrong.now it sounds like crap.

Unburnt fuel. With a freer flowing exhaust, it becomes louder. That's what I've been told by family members who know their stuff about cars.

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

wouldn't it have something to do with the stock manifolds? all my friends with LS1s (01 and 02 specifically) have incredibly smooth sounds, even with the loudmouth... just a thought

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

i have long tubes and cutout. the backpressure is increased as RPM's are increased...and thats when it pops...

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

its because some ******* thought it was a good idea to have both manifolds collet into on aka y pipe and there is to much back pressure this way this is why mustangs will always sound better than camaros because they can run true duals x or h pipes

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

with headers and a cutout, you dont have backpressure. The popping is not because of backpressure.

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

popping isnt about backpressure? what's it about then?

there isnt much backpressure, if any, at lower RPM's with LT's and a cutout. but once you run the RPM's up you have more backpressure, thus more popping...

When I open my cutout the note is a lot smoother and absolutely no popping.

Re: What causes that popping sound in our exhaust?

I liked it for about 2 years but I'm quickly getting tired of it. I've heard that a little thing called duals takes the popping away
