What could this be

Checking to see if anyone else has had this problem. After driving for 20 to 30 minutes the SES light will come on. The car still runs fine with normal oil pressure and no overheating. Usually I can just shut the car off and start it back up and the SES light will stay off.
I had the same situation last night, only this time when I shut it off it cranked for about 5 or 6 seconds before it would fire and when it did the light was still on. I also noticed just a bit before the light came on the first time, I had a big miss at around 3500. It just happened once, but it has never done that before.
I neverv had it scanned before because the light would always go off when I restarted it. I will see if it stays on again today so I can get it scanned.
Any thoughts on what the problem might be? It`s a a 95 by the way.

It could be anything.. get it scanned

If I had to wajor a guess I'd say it's probably the egr or airpump. 99% of the time when I've seen the ses light on a car it's something related to emissions. But that's just a random guess.

Get it scanned

i just got out to mess with it and it took a few rounds of cranking it for 5 seconds or so and it dying before I could get it to idle. The SES light was still on. I don`t have the airpump so hopefully it`s the egr. I`ll findsomeone with a scanner and scan it tomorrow.

You can pull the code even if the SES light is off. It saves the codes for a while.

When you get it scanned, the auto parts places like AutoZone will get confused because the 95 has an OBD-II connector, but an OBD-I PCM. They usually don't understand, or don't have the correct plug.

Same exact thing happened to me a few weeks back, turned out it was the MAF.

Thanks for the help, I will try to explain that to the guy at Auto zone and see if he can pull it off.
I do have a MAF that has been descreened and ported, maybe it finally died on me.

I know on my 96 (obdII) when I forget to plug te MAF in it will die and idle erraticly. I thought that obd I cars could run without the MAF though. Seems like someone a few weeks back was even saying his car ran better with the MAF unplugged.

I will say that I am sure that at least on 96 models, having the MAF unplugged or not working is a bad thing.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

I had an SES light, ran it by AutoZone and found out I'm running lean in bank 2. Most likely an o2 sensor....which I haven't got around to fixing yet. But really just get the codes checked, could be a lot of things. Probably nothing big.
