Ace, are you sure that's not a 30cc (0.030L) dish/dome?

Seems weird that a piston would be marked with the amount that the bore is over some arbitrary amount that only applies to certain engines.

pistons are always marked with overbore that way, at least that is what i was taught in school and i have never seen one that wasnt

Not sure if that is the case or not, I forget what marking my pistons had on them. It would seem silly to me for someone to mark a piston that could be.030 anything as .030 but I have no idea.

ok, so what happened is when you opened up your motor you found the marking of .030 and you now need to order rings to match that?

Sorry retry

Why not mark it as 4.030, otherwise for all we know it could be 3.030, or anything for that matter. The marking just seems a little vague to me.

If you look very closely you will see .030, on the top of the pistons, on the front cover of this book(hard to see I know...use the zoom at the top of the cover). If I recall, the motor in this book was bored .030 over. That is where I've seen it before.

the number indicates the difference from stock

and yes you should be measuring everything anyway, but if the piston says .030 on it then there is an overbore of .030

...because it is assumed that you know the engine (stock specs) that you are looking at (an LT1 isn't going to have a 3.000 bore) and the marking is the deviation from stock size. Pistons and bearings have always been marked this way. If was too confusing for folks, I think they would have changed it by now.
