Talking What have I been missing?!?!

Well, after finding out that the lumpy sound and idle of my cam has been jarring my exhaust S to I pipe slip fitting loose, causing my sputtering sound, I took the s-pipe off so I can loosen and realign everything. Just for kicks I started the car with the back end of the cat open, and DAYUM!!!!!! That's the sweetest sounding thing I've ever heard. A couple of things:

How illegal is it to run an open pipe/no muffler like that?

Does anyone run like this with the rear section on and tied up or something???

And a certainty for me: A nice cutout.

Are you kidding me? That sound is not sweet. I was totally embarrassed just to drive to the muffler shop to get a custom s pipe put on since i bought a catback from a dual cat car. Maybe it sounded ok at idle, but go drive it. It's retarded.

People never cease to amaze me at what suits their fancy.

a 375hp cammed car is going to sound way different uncorked than a relatively stock LT1 motor...i have a thought, while telling him to go drive it first, my suggestion is you go get a big cam too and see what it sounds like

Thanks for the tip magius, but is a 370 hp car with a xe224/236 close enough for you? I know its a lil off on the exhaust side, but darn close if you ask me. I'm familiar with what cars sound like. Yeah its cool to drive it around the block once, but to actually even consider taking it out in public on a regular basis??? to each their own.

heh didn't see the cam in your sig

While I would agree, I drove mine around with an uncorked Y-pipe and to me it sounded completely like crap, I have heard some pretty nice sounding loud as hell cars. I don't think I could live with it that loud but still

my QTEC electric cutout is great, and yes it does sound like a truck at part throttle but when u get on it its soooo sweet and LOUD! I can set my exhaust tone depending on my mood wether it be fully opened or through the magnaflow

Well, she's capped back up. $50 for Meineke to use the hydraulic thingy to fix the squashed slip fitting, check the cat (I thought it was clogged -- it was glowing last night) and reassemble everything. Still sounds good though. Here's my thoughts on the open exhaust:

At idle, it sounds kinda ghetto. At any amount of throttle, there's nothing that compares. It's the sweetest sounding exhaust, or lack thereof, I've heard.

I wouldn't drive 100% of the time on an open cutout because of the vibrations, heat soak through the floorpan, and unwanted Police attention, but an electric cutout would be awesome. My only problem with that is that Everything I have is made for each other. The Random Tech Cat is specifically flanged for my ASM headers, and the Cat-Back, being Random Tech also, is a natural fit. Now, if I go long tubes and mufflex ORP, now we're talking!

To each, his own.....

But even so, I can't imagine enjoying driving a car on the street with an open exhaust. Not to mention all of the people you would disturb with the noise.

Open exhaust sounds AWESOME even on my mostly stock LT1 it sounds incredible. I was forced to drive a day on open longtubes. It was really sweet dont get me wrong, but the noise and insane rattling of the center console do get old quick. I was also nervous of police attention as well. I love the sound but couldnt live with it that long, it gets annoying quick.
