what kind of oil after rebuil?

For break in (first 800-1000KM) Run the cheapest conventional oil. Ones that have the least deturgents etc. (something like a Nu-gold etc)
After break in run what you want.
Also be sure for break in that you fluctuate the rpms alot. Take it on a long highway drive but slow down speed up type deal. (dont stay at a constant RPM)

i always run dino oil for at least 3k miles...after that i switch to synthetic. ive heard horror stories of brand new motors with less than 5k miles on them with oil consumption problems b.c of switching to synthetic too quickly

Break in with a conventional is a myth,,, Many cars are Factory filled with Synthetic- A no detergent oil is a terrible idea for a street engine and most of those oils are very inferior formulas /base oils compaired to the current SL/SM ratings.
A good reason for using a regular DINO thou, is that you should dump the oil relatively soon after initial start up in because it will contain high levels of wear particles fuel dilution, blowby etc.
No sense in dumping $30 worth of oil when you can get it done for $12.
I would go with a 15W40 Diesel oil which has a high level antiwear additives, is cheap and a very robust overall oil.
When you have everything sorted out say in a 1000 miles, you could move to something like a thick weight 30 which would be German Castrol Syntec or one of my favorites is Mobil 1 High Mileage - Appears to be a very very robust oil for $22 in a 5 quart jug at Walmart
