At what point are shorties not adequate?

The SLP's I currently have have 1.75" tubes so, are there many gains to be seen by switching over to a longtube header with the same size primary? I understand that with an increase in cubic inches exhaust is more critical. On a basic h/c package will I see much from longtubes?

I think header length has just has much to do with making power as the primary length. The best setup is equal length long tube headers with a large diameter. The Kooks seem to be the best out there for the LT1, but are very expensive. I'd only consider them in an all out race setup.

I have a friend who races his 93 transam ALOT! When he had shorties on he ran consistant 6.30's (1/8) now that he put long tubes on he runs consistant 6.30's. Take that how you want to but it didn't help him. And yes, I was shocked too.

I have the slp shorts on my 1997 383 - D1 Camaro. I thought about going long tubes. But, I'm always taking it apart, and, the slp's seam to give me the clearance I needed. So, I went with a Ramdom dual cat Y, 3 1/2 single pipe mufflex, and, a 3 1/2" qtp cut-out. That really reduced all the back-pressure resulting from the D1.

Depends on the set-up IMO. I had SLP shorties on my LE1 package and when I switched to Pacesetter LT's the car drove better on the low end and I picked up quite a few more ponies as well. Partly because I got rid of the dual cats, but a lot to do with better scavenging.

Alot of it has to do with whats after the headers, and I mean immediatly after the headers, in our cars I havent seen a set of shorties that have a good transition from the collector to the cat-back.

In my personnal experience I had 1 5/8ths shorties on my 93 T/A (heads cam, etc) I switched to Hooker 1 3/4 longtubes with a mufflex Y. Best ET with shorties was 12.69 @ 111, best with longtubes and Y no other changes was a 12.28 @ 113 mph. The weather both days was Oklahoma Octobers (mid 50s with wind)
