At what point should one install the GM white oil pump spring...

The problem with high volume pumps and stock pans is that there is too little oil capacity in the stock pan to properly drain back and keep a proper oil level. Add into that some drag or road racing, and you're GOING to suck the pan dry at one point. If you've ever seen the oil drain back passages of the LT1 you will know what I mean.

I only installed a HV with my Canton 242T pan.

I've taken out a few LT1s road racing with a stock pan. There is just NO way it can be done without any risks.
