What role does MAF have during engine start?

My son is having a problem associated with the MAF that I can't figure out. Occasionally (it happened once yesterday with the engine stone cold) the engine won't start. Won't pop, stumble, nothing.

Disconnect the MAF (forcing the PCM into speed density mode) and it starts right up. Connect the MAF back up, and everything's fine. Scanmaster shows reasonable response to throttle snaps, etc.

After that the car started up fine every time the rest of the time he was home.

What in the world would cause this? What do I not understand about the PCM/MAF relationship?

TIA, and have a good one,
Mike
