haha.. don't feel bad.. some of us have done this before "myself included".. not knowing subtle differences between the old SBCs and the LT1.. the LT1's hubs don't work like the older motor's hubs flush right up to the crank end.. you have to put a smaller bolt in the crank to push against.. once you get the hub off you'll see

The reason your breaking your pullers is you are pulling on the hub at the same time you are pushing off of the hub. I used a 1/4" long extension...put the end that the socket would go on into the hub hole first and push it in untill it bottoms out on the inside of the crank. Then use your puller to push off of the extension....should come right off. Of course it helps if you have three or four arms...

I tried the 1/4 inch extension. and I still cant get it.
so far I've destroyed 3 pullers, 2 sets of grade 8 bolts and a 3 foot pry bar
I can see the start of machined metal but thats it

You should have seen the look on the guys face at autozone when I brought that thing back in. the worm gear was almost bent 90 degrees
Oh yeah, for anybody else planning to do the same thing. buy the craftsman pullers. It's the only one I found that could accomodate 7/16 bolts without taking a dremel to it. and it's got a flat head making it easy to use a thin bolt or a punch in there..
heh. I'm an expert at this now

Now you hafta put it back on! Oh you did mark the timing position on it did you? You will need it if you plan on ajusting roller rockers without removing anything else. Trust me. I just finish adjusting my rockers. I began with the intake off since I slapped new lifters. That was easy but one the intake was back on I could not tell what whats what!! the differences were so subtle. Thanks to the new lifters!! . Any way good luck.
If you can find a long 7/16 20 count thread stud (same diameter as the hub bolt only about 2 inch longer) then you can thread it all the way in and use a pre-installed nut with wide enough socket to push the hub back in. Make sure its a strong bolt not some house building iron rusty crap cause it takes some "effort" to push that hub back on!.
I am assuming you pulled the entire hub off... my balancer came out easy but I put it back on since I needed to remove the hub anyway. My hub is back on and perfectly aligned (pure luck no thinking went into that ) oh and you may use a hammer to tap it in when it gets a bit..... tight in there. I found out it does help to put pressure on it first then tap it a few times... not too hard then turn the nut again. Repeat the process a few "hundred times" till it seats. You will feel it wen it seats trust me.

Re: What took to get the balancer hub off?
Thanks for the advice. But I didn't really worry about aligning it, I found TDC by watching the lifters, and varifying the position with the cam position.
