What is the widest tire for a stock 16" wheel?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the section width difference between a 245/50 and a 255/50 is only 10mm = 1cm = less than 1/2 inch (1 in. = 2.54cm). How much difference can just 1/2 inch of section width really make? And that's not necessarily tread width, because that 1/2 inch *could* be consumed by a "rim protecting rib" around the lip of the wheel on the sidewalls to protect you from curb rash.
