What would cause a cam to walk?

The teeth got eaten off me oil drive gear, and someone on here thought that my cam might have walked and fugged the gear up.

Re: What would cause a cam to walk?

If the cam plate is missing or worn it'll walk all over the place. i recommended it as one of the things to look for. The plate is located behind the upper sprocket on your timing chain. If the cam walks forward and back it not only ruins the cam, but will take the distributor, or in the LT1's case, the oil pump drive and chew the teeth off of it. Just something to look for. My gut feeling says it may not have happened, but I like to be over cautious...but that's me.
