Whats a good 700+rwhp exhaust system

Well, I am building a drag strip car that will make over 700 rwhp (cross your fingers.lol), and I was wondering if there is a exhaust system that is best for a setup for it. O, its a 383 lt1, with a F1, or ptk turbo setup. Never see this asked, and just wondering.

Custom, it would depend on which one you go with. Either way it's going to cost ya.

strait through mufflers or none at all... it wont cost that much. I have seen people make that kind of power and put it through a off the shelf catback (though you wont see it often)

Does it matter if it is a turbo or supercharger.

If you go with a SC you might be able to just use a off the shelf exhaust system, like mufflex... but for a turbo setup you're going to have to go with a custom exhaust. You should probably speak to someone at Pro Turbo kits about your exhaust if you eventually decide to go that route.

Just because it makes 700rwhp does not mean that it needs 4" exhaust....the same amount of air is being pumped through a 400hp 383 as in a 700hp 383. We use dual 3.5" with Flowmaster race mufflers on 800hp 502's and don't see much backpressure at all. If you were making your 700hp at 9000rpm then the exhaust system would need to be bigger...think CFM/min

That is absolutely not true. If that were the case than any 3" system would be good. With FI...the more air you push..the more power you make...your pushing ALOT more air making 700rw than you are making 400...which is also the reason you need bigger injectors..more air..you need more fuel...which means more being pumped out of the exhaust

I'd say either a GMMG or a 4" Mufflex should do the trick

The Mufflex mufflers both suck (Spintech and BlowMaster). However, the 3.5" and 4" piping is good. Get the piping and put in a Magnaflow muffler and you're good for way over 700 rwhp, plus it's reasonably quiet. BTW, Magnaflow makes a muffler that bolts right into the Mufflex piping with no modifications.

I don't really get your point here. You say a single 4" exhaust system isn't necessarily necessary for 700 hp, but then you say that you run 3.5" duals on an 800 hp big block. You do realize how much more cross-sectional area there is in a 3.5" dual setup vs. a single 4" setup don't you?

# of pipes*(pi*radius^2)

2*(3.14*1.75^2) = 19.23 in^2
1*(3.14*2^2) = 12.56 in^2

So, your comparison isn't valid. Also, where did the assumption that a 400hp motor is going to pump the same amount of air as a 700hp motor come from? That makes absolutely no sense at all. For the OP, I would think either a 3" dual setup or a 4" mufflex system would suffice.

if its a drag car just run some collector headers or bullets right off your headers to dumps. Save the weight.

Re: Whats a good 700+rwhp exhaust system

I've seen the 4" Mufflex support an 1,125 flywheelHP LT1 383 running 20+# of Vortch boost. They took the Mufflex exhaust system completely off the car, to save 50+#, and there was no HP gain when running Borla collector mufflers.

I think MachinistOne may be talking about DUAL 4" pipes as being overkill, particularly when he mentions dual 3.5" mufflers for 800HP 502's. May not be aware the 4" Mufflex is a single pipe cat-back.

What muffler were they running, everyone keeps saying the mufflers on that system are ****.

I've seen a 500 fwhp 406 gain a repeatable 3 mph at the track just by removing the 4" SpinTech muffler.
