Whats this ticking noise! (video inside)

This has been a problem for a while now. Car runs and drives fine, just makes this ticking sound. I can't get a definate answer on ANYTHING with it. I finally got around to taking a vid of it and posting. Any comments or suggestions or anything for that matter would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like an exhaust leak.

Sounds like an exhaust leak for sure. You might also want to make sure that all your plugs are tight. That could be coming out of a spark plug hole and if it is it wont be too much longer before it sounds like you just had a rocker arm fall off because a spark plug just blew out of the head. It is most likely a blown exhaust gasket though.

You can take a long screw driver or a stethoscope, or something like it, put one end on the header flange and the other end up to your ear. If you come across a spot that sounds like popping popcorn there is where your gasket blew out.

That or a really loose rocker arm, which will lead to a bent pushrod and/or a lifter popping up and possibly twisting itself as it goes back in to it's hole making the roller sideways on the cam lobe and leading to something like this:

But more than likely it is an exhaust leak... if you want to check you can the the screwdriver/stethoscope thing on the valve cover and see if you can hear a rocker bouncing around a little.

Most likely. Like previously said, use a stethoscope (or a screwdriver and press your ear against the handle) to see if you hear anything. I would replace the head gasket though. I hear good things about stock GM copper gaskets and the Percy Seal-4-Good, which is what I used.

well, ive had header gasket leaks before, so i know what they sound like, this doesnt really sound like they did. when i had header leaks before, they would pop loud under load and at idle. this is just a ticking sound.

it sounds too quick for exhaust leak. I would check rocker adjustment on that side.

I'm with him. Pull the valve cover.

Exhaust leak? Do you smell exhaust in the engine bay? It sounded like it was only on the drivers side. Do you see any black soot around the header flange? Maybe check the header bolts. If they look good/tight and you don't think it's an exhaust leak, try to reset the valve lash.

A quick and easy way to see if it's an exhaust leak is just hold your hands around the flange and feel for a puff of hot exhaust air. Just don't touch the header obviously...
