why are you afraid to run race gas?
I have been doing it for 2 years now The gains are very good compared to the cost really
I dont run cats and run lead resistent o2 sensors i am just tired everytime people ask questions about there car thats 12.5:1 and up everyone says you have to run race gas like its a big deal i'd like to have gone 15.1 but these heads would not allow it and i am already 5 out of the block

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
many on here i always hear "you have to run race gas" "why would you build a motor where you cant run pump gas" even from a local lt1 racer that was like god in 94 when he was running high 11's says this. i know many on here are on my level or much higher but to the guys that are scarred dont be its not bad on this side of the tracks
plus all my family members just the other day i was tearing down the top end my uncle comes in from riding his sled he said you going back to pump gas?
the big thing is why is everyone so down on it

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
I don't see the need to run race gas I guess, i have no fear of running it. My power goals and many others here have made far more power then i need on pump gas, so why step up? It costs more and the gains aren't that large. I would like more compression thats for sure, but with a cam the size of mine(which isn't huge BTW) would be fine with a static ratio of about 13:1 on pump gas. I think I would rather keep my head flow rather then cutting into the chamber by milling the head and losing flow just to pick up a little bit of compression.
So I guess the reason is there is no need for it at the power levels most of us are going for, that and I would personally like to be able to pull up to the gas station to fill up then buying a drum or having to fill containers. BTW: I will run race gas in my dedicated fuel system for nitrous.

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
maybe it was just cause all my life my dad took me to the dragstrip and thats where i first learned about cars and spent the next 20 years of sundays (i am 25) my cousin runs a top dragster and someday i will trade in the ta for a rail. my main goal is not how fast i can go but how fast from a-b so i quess i am in it for the quickness i never wanted a street car but its all i could aford and i had to start somewhere

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
Well just because you went to the dragstrip alot doesn't mean you need to waste your extra money to run race fuel, but hey thats your call. I would rather run faster on whats widely available and not overly expensive. You wouldn't need to run race fuel anyways even with 13.8:1 compression with a big solid roller, so I guess I am missing the point of this entire post. Is this about bragging because you run race fuel and other people don't waste the money? Because otherwise I am missing the point clearly. Sure you would need to on a 300 shot, but obviously you have a track only car because you don't want a street car i suppose. If i had a track only car i wouldn't be running gas, I would be running one of the many alcohol setups my boss has laying around.

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
I would much rather run pump gas due to the expense. Period. Not afraid to run it, just don't want to pay the 6 bucks a gallon here that it costs. My 68 had 12.5:1 compression and it ran fine on pump gas with about 34 degrees of lead. When I put 110 in it and jumped up the timing to 38 all I did was fry the tires. My nova has 15:1 compression and I run it on methanol, which is cheaper, (I still don't burn enough to make it cost more than race gas) and I run a LOT quicker than I do on gas with it, about 1/2 second was shaved off just switching to methanol.

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
I don't get the "afraid" part. Some people have set their cars up to run pump fuel. Most likely because that's what you can readily get on the street and that it doesn't cost $6-10/gallon. Some (like me) also have cats which they prefer to keep operational. I am not "afraid" to run race gas, but my own preference on a race car is to run alcohol anyway.

Re: why are you afraid to run race gas?
race gas should only be used when it is needed. for those people that have the bolt on cars, there is no need for it. for that matter, i would venture to say that 95% of the NA cars on this board dont NEED race gas and when they use it, they dont pick up any power from it. like posted before, why waste money on something that wont get you any faster?
amean94ta , i would like to see a dyno for your car with race gas vs with pump gas on motor. i bet there would be very little difference in the numbers.
