Wiring an electric water pump to a thermostat switch??

Hi, I am finishing up some mods to my car and one of them is installing an electric water pump. I got to thinking and I have herd that they have a pretty short opperating time. I was wandering if it has to do with the fact that when the motor is cold and the thermostat isnt open, the water pump is kinda fighting aginst its self. I was wandering if it would be a good idea to hook the water pump up to a coolent temp sensor so it comes of somewhere after 160 degrees. I would greatly appriciate your help. I dont wanna burn up anymore of these than possible. Thanks alot.

Jeremy

I've got mine wired to a relay that turns it on when the ignition is turned on. Been that way for close to two years with no problems on a daily driven supercharged car.

MHO would be to let it run and not let coolant sit stagnant in the block while the engine was warming up. This will keep all coolant in the block at a more uniform temperature so there would be no hot spots. To me, that would be more important than worrying about the life cycle of the EWP. Because of the various passages in the LT1 pump, it will circulate coolant in and out of the block to the pump before the thermostat is open. Therefore, it is not really "fighting itself".

Don't get me wrong, I still keep a spare in the back, just in case.

Wire it on a 30 amp relay so the water pump will run directly off the battery. The relay is also wired to the ignition fuse under the hood and it will start the water pump when the key is turned. It works pretty well.
