I want some opinions please! I will buy either 4 Yokohama AVS ES100's or 4 Firestone Firehawk SZ50 Ep's for my car size (p275/40r-17). I've heard that the Yoko's have great handling and pretty good traction for a street radial but I've also heard that the firestones are really good as well. The Yoko's are about $250cdn cheaper for a set of 4 than the Firestones and that money can go towards more mods in the future. Which ones should I get? I don't want drag radials because I need good tread life. Thanks in advance for any input!

 

I like my Yoko's..........although I went for the A032R's........
Great traction in the dry and wet.......
They make a bit of sound on the highway due to the agressive treads pattern.
Not loud enough to bug me though.

My SZ50's have treated me pretty darn good.

 

Those are two of my LEAST favorite brands......

I'd go with BF Goodrich, Dunlop, Kumho, Nitto, even Goodyear or Bridgestone before any Yoko's or Firestones.

I vote for the Yok', especially for the difference in price. You my also want to consider the Kumho Ecsta 712. They aren't wuite as good as the Yok's, but they are a little cheaper.

I currently have AVS sports on my Trans Am, and they are the best damn tire I have ever put on my car. Awsome dry traction, and the wet weather handling is nothing short of perfect. Go with the AVS sports, for the money you can not go wrong!

Now that I think about it, my car makes crappy power...... so that could be why they stick so damn good.

 

another vote for kumho.....i'd get the yoko, because they are cheaper

I always thought they were one of the better for great traction and tread life comprimise???

 

i wanted the avs es 100's , but i settled for dunlop sp5000(same price but z rated) i couldnt find any es100's in a z rating, so i went with the sp's. id go with the yokos though. no reason to have a unlimited speed rating if your car cant beat 170 mph is what i think. w rating is fine, and the tread life is excelent

 

Houdini, how easy can you spin the avs sports in a drag? can you get them to spin pretty easy or can you hardly turn them over? just wondering because i am in the process of choosing tires also.

 

Might want to check out the Goodyear Eagle F1 GD-D3's at Tirerack...all the user ratings are through the roof for them, and there is no other tire that has as good of a rating for tread life (in that category). I will be getting them soon, after I wear out the last two sets of Kumho Ecsta Supra 712's I have...

 

Grendal. Are you aware that Firestone/Bridgestone are the same company?
The tire discussion can go on for days here, simply because everyone runs different tires for different purposes. The best thing to do is go out, do some research, look into the design and build of the tires, look at the driving that you do, and of course, look at the cost. Personally, I have owned anything other than Firestone/Bridgestone tires, and I have never been happier. goodyears are VERY spendy, and I haven't heard many good things about them. I am going to the local TMA here and getting some Z rated tires at $77 a piece. For the cost of 2, I will be getting all 4 done I am not concerned with cornering, just getting them warm enough to run and drive on the interstate (99% of driving is here).

 

I dont like either of those tire makers. I even go with Hankook before either of those. But, if I had to choose, I'd go with Yokos.

 

i did look at the F1 GS D3's. tirerack recommended them to me also over any tire that they carry. however, they are a new tire so i was skeptical. i talked to a few people with them on camaro's and they said they owned better tires previously. so once again i went back to the drawing boards. still no conclusions though.

 

I am on my 2nd set of Firestone SZ's.Now they are the EP's.On my first set,I picked up a 3 inch screw on the freeway,and noticed my car pulling really hard to the right,anyway,I drove 18 miles ,knowing I had a problem,but drove home anyway.The next morning is when I discoverved this problem,so I used my air pump to pump up the tire,enough to get me to the gas station to get the repair,and then drove the tire for well over a year after the fix.It had a burn rim on the side of the tire,but it still held up.Now , the new tires from Firestone have a new tread compound,and they tend to grip more as the tire wears down.I'm happy with Firestone (Bridgestone).My02
P.S. They are a very predictible tire as well,meaning,they do thier job very well,so you can drive better.Hope this helps.
