I need advice (help) picking a cam... anyone?

How does a 230/236 XE grind sound with a mostly engine? I will of course change my rockers/timing set, but I have a guy that is asking a fairly reasonable price for this cam, it only has like 400 miles on it, and I was thinking about picking it up. What do you think about that cam? What would you suggest? It would help if you guys listed your cam setups, and how you like them.

ALSO..... I am in the market for some shorties, let me know if anyone has a set siting around somewhere.

Thank You for your help!

Charlie

I would say with the right converter that would be a good cam.A lot of people run the next size down,224/230 on stock heads.A good program is probably a must to take full advantage of it.I just swapped cams and am really happy with it.

hey charlie,

with the 230/236 with a good set of ported heads and long tubes, you can lay 345+. thats real HP from the dyno, not inflated.

it would be a bad cam for you without a converter so you'd need one of those. my friends car (sean) can wipe zo6's, tt stealths, practically anything. hook up is a really big problem, but its a great czm for power.

i'l go with a 224/230

its big enough that you dont kill yourslef and still otz of power.

Lightbulb Hey Charlie...

Call CompCams, tell 'em what you got and ask if that cam will work with it or what you will need to make it work.

CAMS are ONE of the pieces of an engine you DON'T take local
advice on, or you could be... Sorry-Charlie!

Get the advice from people who make them and you cannot go wrong!

well, i agree w/Hink, sorta. you cant go wrong by calling the manufacturers and getting the best opinion from them. but, remember, its not that the cam is too big, its that the eng. isnt built enough.

but aside from all that, I think that cam would be fine now, but youd be giving up some of its potential while you didnt have the rest of the pieces to match it. you really need ported heads, a nice size stall conv, and rear gears to best match that cam. but w/that stuff your car will fly. so it depends on your future plans. but I think rear gears and bigger stall should come first, then the cam.

Hey guys, thanks for the advice! I have opted to wait till I can grab a better torque converter and a set of heads before I grab a cam.

Thanks again!
