you guys seen the new pontiac G8 yet?

I'll have to see where I read that from, the article said the canadian plant would produce the G8's for NA, and aussie would still produce G8 for other areas of the world. I hope Im right. the GTO was a huge hassle for people due to the extra long wait period after you ordered a car. a turbo v6 could be a cool option? and the vette wasnt the only car to recieve the LS6, so why do you think the LS7 would be so special?

I'd like to see G8 produced in NA too but we'll see how it plays out. Remember the LS6 was nearly the same as the LS1 and the cost to produce was probably no more than an ordinary LS1. The LS7 is a specialty motor built by hand at Wixom complete with forged crank, titanium rods and valvetrain, dry sump oiling - basically a production race motor. I know you're familiar with the LS7 though but for those who arent, thats what it is. As a crate motor its $15,000 plus (something like that I think, either way its expensive). The engine just isnt economical, the volume needed may not be practical, its life is nearly over and will be phased out by the end of the decade. An LS7 Camaro or G8 for that matter would cost in excess of $60k easy due to all of the structural and drivetrain changes necessary to handle the power nevermind the cost of the engine itself. The LS7's replacement the LS9 or whatever it will be called (the blown 6.2L in the works), is what we could be looking at for the ultra high-performance engine option. I wouldnt think G8 would get it still as a sporty type sedan, but I could see the 500+ hp powerplant finding its way into Camaro however.

true on the hand assembled race engine thing. I was thinking of a scaled down version.
but I disagree about the chassis not being able to handle the power? its the same chassis as the camaro will have. and at 4000 lbs, its no flimsy design. I have yet to see the frame/chassis of either car but would be willing to bet it will be strong and plenty capable. if we can make our flimsy unibody Fbody chassis handle double that kind of power, I cant see that being an issue for the new chassis. whatever eng. it is, you can bet on it being a detuned version of whatever is in the corvette.

Oh no dont get me wrong, I didnt mean the chassis cant take it. In fact, that kind of capability should have already been engineered into the chassis to begin with. The IRS, trans, etc on the base and midlevel cars wont be able to stand up to prolonged use unchanged. It may also be possible that a few choice reinforcements on the chassis will need to be added such as Ford did with the GT500 over the lesser Mustang models.
I agree on the engine possibly being a detuned version that we'll see in the Vette or no less than based on an LSx variant.
