I'm Baaaack. Almost
For nearly 2 years now my Camaro has been sititng in the garage with a blown engine, which is why I've not been posting very much in this forum. Considering the massive blowby I'm getting, I'm guessing I probalby a cracked piston. Funny how that happens revving the $hit out of an engine for far too long. Oops. Lesson learned.
I had planned on saving the $11k CDN to buy a 502, but every time I get half way, something big comes up. As of today, I'm exactly half way to a disconcertingly expensive 502 and a milder option from www.speedomotive.com is starting to look very good. I could order their 400hp 'street master' right now (423hp, 437tq) or I could wait 6 weeks and get the 383 'Street Warrior' for around $5k CDN or the 415 cubic inch 475hp 'Maxi Mouse' for $5.5k. Decisions, decisions
How much would I have to pay to get one of these across the border?
Does anyone know of anything similar local, so I won't have to deal with customs?

Umm... Aly, I'm sorry but from what I've heard, local engine builders don't know anything about anything, a monkey can build better engines than they can!!! I know so many people that got ripped off now & people that had their motors rebuilt like 4 times because they can't put it together properly!!!
Buy all your engines from the states, have it shipped here, look at Shauns engine, abused so many times & detonated a million times & was still perfect when it was taken apart!!!

Secondly Shaun's engine was built by Terry Kershaw, in Langley
There are a lot of engines that are built locally that are running extremely well, you just need someone who know what they are doing and well not skimp out important parts

Ohh yeah, but not Shauns engine wasn't built by Terry sorry bud, it was a mail order, NOW it got disassebled & reasembled with new rings in it BY TERRY KERSHMUCK in Langley, but that engines hasn't yet proven itself, plus its only rings so its still not done up by Terry!

No I think he built it, plus what I'm refering to are just LT1's & soon I'll bet LS1's.
I know some people are gonna step in here & say there is no differnce between an LT1's internals & a 1st GEN SBC, but for some reason no LT1 was yet built right, or had its heads ported right. Admit it, you guys are the same guys who overlook gas hikes, time to see reality!!!

get ahold of dueck on marine, they can get GM performance parts crate engines in, give em a call, dont quote my on this but a guy i know inquiried about one a while back and they said a 502cid 502hp onw was just shy of 9g not bad i guess. phone them and check it out

I will agree that nobody can port LT1 heads in BC but that is mainly due to the lack of experience with them but for the $800cdn it cost to port them it is worth it IMO.

Bunker, High Performance Engines has built stroker LS1 motors. But THE problem locally is not the engine builder, it's the tuning. Nobody local can tune a built LT1 or LS1 properly.
BTW: Shauns motor was bought off of Ebay as a stroker LT1 for nitrous with JE Flatops, he had Terry rebuild it with Blower Pistons, and that was the motor he just re-freshed with Terry again. So I would say Terry DID build that motor. He just doesn't know how to tune EFI, he told that to my face.

Yeah I bear Terry no ill will. We had an issue between us, as most of you know, but it was adressed to my satisfaction. I'm not unsatified with my experiences with Terry but I will say that he is not an LT1 expert - but then nobody else is - and he never said that he was.
I would say that Terry would have NO trouble building a great SBC motor. He has ton TON's of those. I also think Jim Richmond is a credible guy
HOWEVER, if anyone were to ask me how to do it next time, I have some thoughts. I would do it very differently. I would have either bought a crate motor from ARE or MTI or Nu-tek for all sorts of reasons.
For heads only I would DEFINATELY go to Dave of Flow Techics in Seattle area. I think that guy has proven his talent MANY times to guys locally here.

Don Murrey originally had his motor built by Ron Parr and then High Perf Engines rebuilt it (99% on that one)
Local engine builders are pretty good around here; take a look at Glen Braid's new 377cid. 1800hp with his old set-up and now that he wants to go 6's, I'm assuming well over 2000hp. I think the local guys are MORE than capable.

Welcome back Erik . Personally I would prefer to buy locally. The best thing to do is walk into a reputable engine shop (I can get you some names) and tell them how much $$$ you have and what you want (easy to drive,barely streetable, or race ready etc) and see what sort of power they can make with that. Its been my experience that engine gurus do their best work like that. Only possible negative is that engine shops need to stay current, so they need to test out the new stuff and see how it perfroms.... often they use customer engines and let them run them and see what happens. Its best to get a tried and tested combo, just make that clear to the engine guy .
