what does the short dowel pin on the cam mean? will this fit my stock 96 lt1? and what else would i have to buy just curious

 

On the front of the cam there is a dowel pin. It is used to locate the camshaft gear correctly on the end of the cam.

In 93-94 when GM used a non vented opti, the opti was gear driven off a gear behind the camshaft sprocket I believe.

In 95 and up GM used a longer dowel pin the drove the opti. The dowel stuck out past the camshaft gear and went into the back of the optispark.

If you have a 95 and I assume you have a vented opti you will need a cam with the long dowel pin. If not the car won't run because it will not be turning the optispark.

If I have any of this wrong please feel free to correct me.
