dish the pistons.

sure you lose some quench, but the heads would make up for it...........

btw, im still curious.

how do they fit both the LT1 and SBC blocks?

i thought that if you used the LT1 coolent passages on a SBC, it would dump coolent in the crankcase.

The coolant passages on the deck surface are the same. The main problem with a gen 1 head on a lt1 is the oil drain back holes on the heads are blocked by the lt1 block so they need welded up and re drilled. On typical Gen 1 heads you also have to weld the outer intake coolant passages or it will dump coolant into the crankase. With the sb2 stuff you can let it circulate through the valley and then back to the radiator like the tube coming from the back of the standard LT1 heads.

How exactly does a dish loose any quench area?

Dish should be in the middles of the piston face, preferably allowing increased valve lift or angle (18* say)... quench is really only the outer rim of the piston... the idea being that near TDC the quench near the outter edge of the cylinder "injects" the combustion mixture towards the center of the combustion chamber for better turbulance and combustion.

I've got a set of Wiseco pistons for my stroker with a -15cc dish that makes this much easier to understand... just wish I had pictures right now. anyway, there is a 1/2" thick "rim" or "washer" looking form around the top edge that would be the same as a flat-top piston, but inside it has a suttle dip towards the center. The bulk of the 15cc's though seems to be the larger valve reliefs that now work with BOTH 23* and 18* heads.

I've read that moving the center of the combustion chamber into the piston face like this also promotes a more effective quench effect, since the "injection" at TDC is done into the middle of the combustion chamber, not just at the bottom as in flat-top pistons.
