Carnauba waxes:Pros & Cons???
Hi,
I just won a can of Eagle Ones Carnauba wax/cleaner. I was wondering if anybody has opinions on this type of wax, good or bad.
I normally used Eagle Ones polish follwed by "Wet Look" spray. These products helped me runner-up and then win in two Super Chevy shows plus various local shows in my now sold 98 Z28. Thanks in advance.

I have used Eagle1 products in the past, and to sum up in one word how they performed for me, crap. At best, they just another cheap, average, off the shelf product. I had bad streaking and just plain sorry results when I used their stuff and have never bought any since. I think Eagle1 was one company who was using that Teflon crap in their products which was proven to be of no use on car finishes. In other words, Eagle1 rates down there with Turtle Wax etc with me.
Pros of using carnauba: Only thing I can think of is very short term gloss, and short term durability.
Cons: Unless you're using a super high quality carnauba (very expensive), it will usually discolor or yellow your paint. I know this from first hand experience as well. Carnauba is also very brittle, will melt off your paint, has no long term lasting power or shine, will leave white chalky residue in the cracks of your car (very aggrivating), and it's simply becoming old-school with all the new formulations out there. I will say though that if you are willing to pay the price, you can get a decent quality carnauba, i.e. Pinnacle, P21S etc, that would lessen these negative effects, but not completely make them go away. I dont use carnauba now simply because it wont last longer than 1 month in most cases. Polymers and acrylics are the way to go!
It's good to hear your car placed high in competition, but I think you could really knock 'em dead with a show car quality product.
Hope this helps...

Here's some good info on conventional waxing and the products I use. Eagle one is ok in terms of carnuba, though I'm not a big fan of anything you can buy at autozone.

Also, this is the current discussion on carnuba/sealants vs zaino. Some good info can be had here also.

Use that stuff on your winter beater and get some ZAINO for your FBody nothing is better than Zaino, and I used to be a hardcore Mother's wax guy...one coat of Zaino made me defect to synthetic polish forever
as for Eagle 1, they make an awesome rim cleaner, only problem is the acid in it eats away at the finish of your rims and also eats away at the skin on your body strong stuff...

The truth of the matter is Carnauba is a, dark yellow, brittle wax. It has no durability. It also has no high shine. In reality it's actually a dull wax. It is not optically perfect and leaves a film (haze) on the paint finish. If you took two identical colored cars and placed them
side by side. The one with Zaino would be the true color. The other car would have a slightly different tint to it.
What you are seeing with Carnauba is a combination of carnauba wax, polyethylene wax, paraffin wax and the key gloss ingredient SILICONE OIL.
Silicone oil is inexpensive, greasy, smeary, not durable, but shines like crazy. Just try Pledge furniture polish on your car. Voila same shine. Hmm. Pledge is loaded with silicone oil, so is Armor All tire
dressing. Did you ever notice how greasy, smeary and dusty, furniture looks with Pledge on it. How soon does your car get dusty after you polish/wax with your favorite product????? When does the gloss start to drop??? I already know..Now here's the best part. Silicone oil and other oils are an essential ingredient of Carnauba based products. It's the only way to achieve a shine. That's why it's used in all Carnauba based polish/wax. However,
it has no durability, does not last and it attracts dust and dirt like a magnet and once dust settles on it, it sticks to it. Dust on paint causes tiny Swirls and Scratches. Also Carnauba is very brittle. It will not stay on the paint surface for any length of time. Most of the time less than 3 weeks....... The sun also effects Carnauba based products. The sunnier and hotter it gets, the faster it deteriorates. Remember wax melts and oils tend to migrate to the surface and evaporate... Sad but true.
Fact: On a sunny 80 degree day, the surface temperature of black paint will reach 149 degrees and go up to 198 degrees if the ambient temp reaches 90. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what happens to the wax. When designing and formulating a polish. These are just a few of the
factors that you want to avoid. Show Car polish has a wet looking gloss, incredible durability, water beads like crazy, is not effected by the sun and does not attract dust
or dirt. There are no oils, abrasives or wax in Zaino. Nothing sticks to Zaino Show Car polish. I am probably the most **** person when it comes to optically enhanced paint finishes and protection and polish/wax. I've tested over 300 polish/wax to date. Nothing even comes close to the Zaino system.
Truth of the matter is, a product does not have to have carnauba in it to have paint
protection. Synthetic products are taking over as they have way, way more protection and durability on a painted surface as they hold up to heat much better than carnauba, like Mobil 1 holds up to heat better than dino oil. Check out the April 2000 issue of Motor Trend in an article named "Paint Care Myths and Reality"
I am direct quoting here:
Motor Trend question "A wax made of 100 percent carnauba is superior to those using
lessor amounts?"
Answer by Mike Pennington, director of training for Meguiars "Carnauba wax has been a favorite among car enthusiasts for years, but don't believe than any wax is made of 100
percent carnauba. As the hardest natural wax known, carnauba is much too hard to apply
directly to automotive paint. It comes in bricks that must be melted and added to a
company's formulation. If a paint protectant advertises "pure carnauba," it means the part
of the formulation that is carnauba is pure, not that it's 100 percent carnauba. According
to Pennington, todays synthetic polymer technology actually provides better protection than carnauba"

Seriously, though, these guys are biased zaino fanatics. I like zaino, don't get me wrong but they just present one side of the story.
True, carnuba will melt off your car on a hot day. It does provide great protection and awesome shine and it will not "dull or miscolor" your paint unless you have a low grade yellow carnuba wax. Go get some pinnacle ($70 per bottle). That stuff will out shine zaino believe me and it will not discolor your paint. Problem is, it's insanely expensive and it won't last that long. So what do you do? Mix the process up with something that has staying power. What is this? Acrylic polymers (sealants). Klasse glaze is a great one. The stuff lasts up to a year! Awesome protection, great shine (you can put on multiple coats for a real deep, wet, look) and it helps dark colors especially. Then for a little more protection and an even better shine put some carnuba on the car once a month. I like one grand blitz wax for this. It's not too expensive but it leaves a good shine with little or no discoloration. Also, pick up some meguiars' #34 and spray that one to maintain the shine/protection and make that carnuba last as long as possible. Carnuba is great, it's just not perfect. Use it in conjunction with some sealant and you will not be disappointed. Or go buy some zaino, it's great stuff to. I just want you to hear BOTH sides of the argument.

I have tried all different kinds of "wax" and applied them in different ways and it looked good to start with. however after awhile it stopped beading water. when I tried Zaino I was not sure if it could do better however I was amazed at the shine it gave me and how long it last.
I waxed my sisters car and Zainoed my car about two months ago and my car is still shinny while her car's shine is almost gone. mine stills beads water and her's does just a little. I have never seen anything that works as good as Zaino.
