chrome peeling on factory wheels

I have a 99 Z/28 with the 5 spoke factory chrome wheels.I just pulled the L/F wheel to do my brakes and found the chrome on the back of the wheel peeling very badly. I thought I would grind it down & clean it real good then clear coat it to prevent it from peeling any further cause at this point it hasn't reached the part of the wheel that's visible from the front. Has anyone else had this problem ?? Does anyone have any better ideas on fixing it,short of a full re-chrome ? I thought maybe I would contact Chevrolet but I'm not sure how far that would get me,if anywhere at all. Any thoughts ?? Thanks

What you said is a good idea, to stop peeling on a set of custom wheels I had I put some POR 20 paint in the peeling spot and that sealed it and it peeled no longer.

Chrome wheels are famous for peeling...

Those chrome wheels from GM or SLP had pitting and peeling problems bigtime.

I have this same problem on my SLP Firehawks. Whats this POR 20 paint you mentioned and where could I pick some up? Is it like a special paint or something?

Any info would be GREATLY appreciated because I'd like to stop it before it reaches the outside surface.

I don't know what you're talking about the factory GM wheels having problems with peeling chrome.
I don't wash behind the face of the wheel where the brake is, but the face of the wheel still looks brand new.

I've detailed cars for 3 years and I must say that OEM chrome wheels, wheither they are GM, Ford, Lexus, Benz, Chyrsler, are far superior to aftermarket chrome wheels. Those huge 22 dubs on SUV's, most of them have crap chrome, its either peeling, thin, or isn't as shiny as it should be.

Not the face of the wheel, behind the wheel, but if not taken care of it could work it's way to the face

Question

Well I just started my project of fixing my wheels. I ground down all the crappy spots and repainted the entire inner wheel area with POR-20. How many coats did you guys use and did you put clear or anything over it? And how easy is it to clean with the POR-20 paint?

I just ended up grining down the bad spots & then I used Dupli-color Hi Performance Wheel coating in CLEAR.That seemed to work well & it did a nice job.If for some reason it doesn't hold up I'll just re- do it using POR.Whatever you use just make sure the wheel is as clean & dry as possible,it's all in the prep.
