How to polish aluminum?
Since I have my alternator off the car, I decided to go ahead and polish it up. I have a dremmel and about 100 polishing bits. 2 problems, 1 is I cannot seem to get a shiny finish, just a dark dull one. 2nd, I seem to be getting the "ripple" effect (similar to looking down the side of a fender of an older car). I've been thinking about hand sanding first to avoid this, but it seems that would take forever.
I know there was a web site that went into great detail about polishing the aluminum under the hood. Anyone know the URL or have any advice?

I handsanded my brake lines with good results, followed by Blue Magic Metal Polish. They turned out great, but they eventually rust.
I'd hand sand, then do the same, and either use the metal polish once a month or so, clear coat it, and/or Zaino/wax it.

You probably want to get a kit along the lines of this.

However, these are intended to be used with an air die grinder, I'm not sure how well a dremmel will work.
I hate when you can't link to a specific item. Anyhow go to www.eastwodco.com and do a search for "manifold polishing kit".
Also, did you disassemble your alternator? I would be afraid of all of the dust and particles getting into the internals.
I haven't polished my alternator yet but I might look into it this winter.

I just finished machine/hand polishing a set of C4 aluminum wheels. Wow....it was very time comsuming, but the results look great. Check out this web site. It has a "how to" section. I used this as a reference.

I bet that was a rough @$$ job polishing those C4 wheels. I'm getting ready to polish a set of 97 T/A wheels I'm going to use that web site as a ref. as well. Hey if anyone wants to come help polish the wheels I'll buy the pizza and beer!!
