Steam clean your seats, carpet and headliner. Here is a surefire way to remove all old smells:

1) Rent/borrow a small bissel steam cleaner.

2) First time through, use HOT water and a good cleaning solution.

3) Second time through, use HOT water and some febreeze mixed in with it.

4) Clean EVERYTHING! Then wipe down the dash, gauges, and console. When you think everything is clean, clean it again!

...just a word of caution Be careful with the headliner when steam cleaning. I had a similar situation when I owned my '87 Formula in '89(previous owner was a smoker)and I steam cleaned the interior. What happened was the headliner material became unglued from the matting and began to sag. Now this may have been do to the steam and/or combination of the sucking of the steam cleaner. The sagging progressed daily and eventually I had to have a new headliner put in. ...Good luck.

If your interior is already clean but the smoke odor is a problem you might want to try the Meguire's Odor Eliminator Spray. This product works for me. It neutralizes the bad odors rather than covering them up with a perfume. It is not very expensive (~$4) and works for all of my cars.

Try ozone...my wife worked for a fire comapny and when houses and furniture smell really bad like smoke they use ozone (O3). Call a fire damage / smoke damage company for details.
