Strange Gunk Around Trim of Hatchback Window-Adhesive?

I have this black gunk around the trim of my hatchback window. Been there for years, and pretty much have ignored it, but wondering if any of you have seen this stuff.

It's has consistency of tar. It doesn't wash off. You can scrape it off. A buddy of mine says it's the adhesive from the window. Crap, what does that mean? Is the window gonna pop out someday as I'm cruising at 95mph?

Anybody seen this and is there a better way to clean it, besides scraping it off the glass?

The rubber trim around the edge of the glass has an adhesive the oozes out when it gets hot, all F bodies I have ever seen have this unless you have an F body that has no rubber trim at all around the glass and I have seen some of those also, what you can do is to scrape the excess off with a razor blade and clean the rest up with a product called Goof Off which is sold in the paint dept at WalMart.

So this is just the adhesive for the rubber molding then, not for the glass, right? The window's not going to pop out. The Goof Off is clear coat safe, correct?

Its molding adhesive, has nothing to do with holding the window in, the Goof Off will hurt the paint but why would you want it on the paint? I thought your gunk was on the glass?

The melted adhesive is mostly on the window side, but some has overlapped onto the paint, where the spoiler starts. Of course, I won't scrape the paint side. I guess I'll just clean up the glass side for now.

Thanks for the info.

i have the same stuff, and it really bugs me to look at, i use a razor blade to remove it when the car is really hot, but only seems to take care of it until next time the car gets hot...

I just removed this stuff from my car today. All I did was use a razor blade to get most of it off, and then use Turtle Wax's Bug & Tar remover to get any residue off. The Bug & Tar Remover is supposedly clear coat safe and works really well, so you might want to consider that.

I have a can of bug & tar remover and have used it on many cars with no problems. I always make sure and clean it off well and wax afterwards.

I think every one of the cars does this and it will continue to happen. I would clean mine and it would ooze out day after day. I finally just cut the trim off of my rear glass. It serves no purpose other than for cosmetics and after I got mine off, I liked it better without it, it gives the rear window a cleaner look and with no more hassle!
