Taking care of Chrome wheels??

This the first time i've had a car with chrome wheels, so i'm in need of some schooling on them.
Today when i was washing my car, i noticed theres some oxidation or stains or something on my wheels. It looks just like dirt and brake dust, but it WILL NOT come off for nothing.
What do I do? I havent polished the wheels since I bought the car in October. How often am I supposed to polish them? And what do I do about these marks?
Thanks
Chris

Try a claybar, or dawn liquid detergent.

Dawn removed most of my baked on brake dust on my wheels.

Havent tried a claybar yet, but heard that works on wheels too

I have chrome wheels on 4 of my cars, I wash them really well with car wash, then clay them twice a year to keep them clean, use your favorite polish/wax when you do the car, this will help keep them looking good, a synthetic product will last 4-5 times longer and withstand heat much better than carnauba products will.

You really shouldn't have to polish chrome wheels. Thats one of the big reasons to get them over straight polished wheels. Just clean them regularly and scrub them down a couple times a year. If you let them go however you get the piting and staining your talking about. American Racing makes a cleaner thats really nice but there are plenty of household items also.

If I dont have to polish them, then whats this junk on them? It looks like brake dust and dirt, in patches. But WILL NOT come off. I dont wanna use anything too strong, but i want the junk off, then i want to polish and wax them so when something sticks to it, its not sticking to the wheel, but to the wax.
