Tire shine products that contain silicone can make your tires appear brown and aged over time but I've never heard of one causing cracking. Look on the bottle and if it says it has silicone don't use it.

Chuck the gel and get some Meguires Hot Shine. This stuff is all I would ever use on tires. Not only makes em shine but you can actually CLEAN you tires or any rubber with this stuff with excellent results!
