Unhappy LT1 shifter problem

This is for my g/f 's 97 Z. When coming down from P to R or D the shifter works normally. When coming back up however from 2 to D, D to N, N to R, R to P the shifter feels very sloppy and loose/ as if the little wheel on the shifter is not seating in the notches properly. Sometimes you have to slam it forward to get it to lock into park. Do I need to replace the shifter? Im thinking the plastic notches the shifter seats in for each gear are worn. The car only has 50k. Any suggestions?

Pull the console off and look at the teeth, it takes 2 seconds to pull it off, just be careful about the bulb under there because the wire isn't very long. I wouldn't think that it would wear out, I've never heard of that happening before. But if it is it shouldn't be hard to find a replacement at a junkyard, just go to J&B's on 50. Hope this helps broh

Sounds like something might be loose somewhere. Be sure to crawl underneath and make sure the bracket is tight where the cable meets the transmission.

Ditto that check where the cable meets the trans. I had this happen on my 91 and the bolt fell out of the linkage. Just had to get a new bolt no biggie. Hope this helps.
