Ucf

Anyone live in the old dorms? Anyone majoring in Computer Science?

For all sakes this kid is my brother, but really isn't.. He will be up Monday to see the school and I would like to show him the dorms and a few other UCF sights. I would also like him to be able to possibly speak with someone who currently is in computer science to answer some of his questions... You can be a freshman or senior. He will be attending this next fall. If you can email him, speak with him or even meet him that would be cool.. I know your all busy just wanted to ask… So if you do not mind showing off your dorm room so he can get an idea of what one is like let me know.. The nastier the better

Also if you were stuck giving a UCF tour where would you take them?

Student Union, Computer Labs, New Fitness Center what else?

Also why did you choose UCF? Answer here if you do not mind...

hehe I tried to get into the dorms and they wouldn't let me my freshman year(thank god)

SO I always had an apartment. MAin reason I picked UCF, its still in-state rates, is a growing school, at the time I was interested in an engineering program, but was also interested in the school of business as a fall back(which I did)

I had a few small scholarships for football, but turned them all down all were at podunk schools halfway across the US, with like 2 majors I wasn't interested in.

Its a fun school, I like the motorsports following in the area, just wish they had a show like TOwer shops like south Florida.

Only thing I really despise about the Orlando area is crime rate and crappy weather, always hot as ***** or a terrential down pour, much better in South Florida

I chose UCF because it has a good academic reputation.

I started college at a private university in Tampa and the academics there SUCKED bigtime and I felt it wasn't worth the money, so I spent another year there, got my AA and started looking for a state school to transfer to.

I feel that people go to UF and FSU because of their football, party, and name recognition. I started noticing that a lot of people I knew from high school who went to these schools ended up transferring to UCF after a year or two because they didn't like UF or FSU. I also noticed that I never heard about people leaving UCF to go to the other schools I mentioned (not like it hasn't happened).

Basically what it came down to was that UCF had a nice, clean, attractive campus. Everyone I met was real cool. I could use my Bright Futures scholarship here, and a few other things sold me.

UCF isn't the typical large state university where you'll go to class and watch a damn videotape of what you're supposed to be learning about. Yes, you will have some large classes, but your major classes are capped at about 55 students. Teachers are always available to help, the computer labs and the rec. center are awesome, and the campus is never overpopulated during the day. I always see my friends and people I know all the time. There are a variety of different dining venues under one roof, and there's TONS of clubs, groups and sports for you to participate in.

UCF gives you some bang for your buck.

Anasazi, What are some of the differences between thsoe 2 majors? I've been caught inthe middle and I'm not too sure which one I want to pursue. I was leaning more towards Comp Sci at first, but liek you noticed that its gonna be hard to fidn a job because everyone and their cousin seems to have the same degree. lol

If you want send me a PM or email so the thread isnt hijacked.

computer engineering has a LOT of math, 2 more courses and you have a math minor.

also computer engineering is a lot of electrical stuff (lots of EEL classes) ... almost all hardware kind of stuff.

Definately. Take that from a guy who works in the field. Most of the people I talk to nowadays are in India. What scares me the most is that they are now building applications for our communications, financial and utility industries over there. It's a well known fact that they code back doors into these systems. What's gonna happen in 5 to 10 years when we decide that the level of service isn't acceptable (beleive me it's bad) and try to bring the jobs back to the US? We're gonna be shut down. You thought the aftereffects of 9/11 was bad.

Sorry for the hijack BTW.

As for the IT industry, I am in the middle of an MIS degree, and I am considering maybe moving to another business degree.

in india they have some of the best technical schools on the planet, one of which is MUCH more selective than MIT and may even surpass MIT in academics, it is world renound for being amazing, but the name escapes me at this moment. not only do they have all these schools over there pumping out comp sci majors, but they also can be paid MUCH LESS than americans, and will generally work harder and longer hours. it is because of these things all our computer science jobs are being shipped overseas to singapor and india.

india has stolen a lot more jobs than you may realize... ever call an 800 number for a major corporation's customer service? there is a BIG chance that the person you are talking to is in india, and has been taught how to sound american and they are given fake american names. this has been going on for YEARS but people just don't realize it.

hell, just look at who is teaching most of the computer science classes over at UCF, half of the damn professors are from india.
