ABS malfunctioning: modulating under normal braking conditions

I have this intermittent problem with my 1995 Camaro. When approaching a complete stop, the low traction light comes on and the pedal begins modulating as if the tires are locking up. This is under normal braking conditions where ABS should not be proportioning.

Has anyone encountered this or know what could be wrong? Maybe a faulty wheel speed sensor? What can I check?

Thanks,

-Scott.

I don't know how you'd check but it sounds like a faulty wheel speed sensor to me . . . I had similar problems with my '98 Chevy Ext Cab and had to replace two wheel speed sensors

problem solved

I had that identical problem when the rear axle sensor started to have problems with clearance to the reluctor ring. You might want to pull the sensor and make sure there are no metal particles building up on it.

If it was a totally screwed up wheel sensor, you would get the "ABS INOP" light on the dash.

Tried to clean mine before replacing them, didn't solve the problem . . . should have mentioned that first

Re: ABS malfunctioning: modulating under normal braking conditions

Thanks guys,

I should have mentioned too, that the ABS INOP light does come on after the low traction light.

When it happens, it is in this order: low trac light and pedal modulates as vehicle stops, when stopped ABS INOP. The ABS light may go off and the process repeats.

This just started and doesn't happen all the time.

I replaced the rear end gears about 1500 miles ago but I will check the sensor.

Thanks again,

-Scott.

Re: ABS malfunctioning: modulating under normal braking conditions

My car does this same thing, only my abs light stays on constantly. Once the Abs light comes on my brakes function like normal. I tried to find a wheel speed sensor on the autozone website, but no luck....what is it called and does anybody know the price of one of these things?

Thanks

The ABS light can come on for many reasons; it will be very expensive to just start buying parts to fix you problem. You can have the code read for the ABS issue to narrow down your issue.

The front sensors are part of the hub. It is a sealed part and you can't replace just the sensor. The rear one is on top of the center section of the rear if you have abs only and at the ends of each axle if you have traction control.

I agree you should have the codes read. You will probably have to go to a dealer to have it done.
