Adjusting Steering rack preload

I found this thread while searching:
http://web.camaross.com/forums/showt...=steering+rack

It also references this diagram: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#rack_preload

What does adjusting the preload do? Will/can this eliminate my steering rack "play"?
Anyone able to enlighten me?

It will not get rid of play, it increases the resistance of the steering wheel causing it to be harder to turn and return. Common sources for steering wheel play are the rag joint, worn tie rod ends and play in the rack and pinion.

I replaced my steering rack a couple of years ago. Not a big deal and not that expensive.
