BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

Anyone got an opinion on this. My 94 Z28 has LS1 brakes on it now but I'm consittering the Baer kit. Is the stopping power consitterably better? Or should I just get better pads for the LS1 brakes and be done with it?

Thanx

convert to C5, less money and designed for the road. The bear kits are more toward racing and less durability.

Thats why I was looking at the track kit. The 13" rotors are the heavier one piece OEM type that are more durable than the lighter 2 piece units. The calipers are also very simular to the GM PBR two piston units.

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

The Baer Track Kit, which I have, copied the C4 brake setup. I really like it. I never had the LS1 setup so I can't compare. The C5 setup is better (better caliper design) but takes more room inside your rims. Check your clearance (not all 17" rims are the same ID) using the guide on the Baer webiste. My Enkei Winns would not fit the C5 setup and barely clear the Baer 13" Track Kit.

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

I've had LT1 brakes, stock 12" C4, stock C4 13" (J55 option), the Track kit, Z06 brakes, and now LS1 brakes (converted to them on my Firehawk). In order of preference I would choose:
C5/Z06
LS1
Track kit
stock J55 C4
stock 12" C4
LT1

The track kit is a nice upgrade from the LT1 or 12" C4 kit, and is even a little better than the 13" C4 kit due to the design of Baer's rotor (thinner vanes with more rotor material for better heat sink ability). However, I would take the 12" LS1 brakes or C5/Z06 brakes over the track kit. The caliper/pad area is much larger, and a better design, and if I remember correctly the rotors are thicker as well. People that run on roadcourses complain of the LS1 calipers spreading occassionally, but you haven't seen spreading until you run C4/Track kit calipers on a roadcourse. They are not nearly as strong as even the LS1 calipers and will wear out much quicker. Also, pad changes on the LS1/C5 calipers are MUCH easier than on the C4/Track kit. Finally, rotors are a lot less expensive for the LS1 & C5 than for the C4 or especially Baer's rotor for the Track kit.

Really, the only reason to go with the Track kit is if you want the look of 13" rotors, but your wheels won't clear the C5 setup.

LT4Firehawk,

I agree with your write-up. Just one clarification, I understand that Baer improved their caliper design to address the spread issue that they had on their original calipers.

Unless they have changed it in the last year, that is incorrect. The caliper Baer uses for the Track kit is the same exact caliper as the Grand Sport caliper, just with the Baer logo on it. The Grand Sport caliper is slightly stiffer than a standard C4 caliper, but it will still have spreading issues for track use. Realistically, almost all floating caliper designs will have problems with spreading for track use, more because of the design than any other reason. All that force acting on the caliper bridge will eventually cause the caliper to spread unless the bridge is way more substantial than any stock design I've seen. Even the C5 caliper will eventually spread, it'll just take longer for it to happen. The only floating caliper that I've seen that I'd think might have a chance of not spreading is SSBs new Tri-power caliper:
http://www.ssbrakes.com/products/det...ette&year=2002
It has a lot heavier duty bridge than any of the other calipers we've been discussing, and I'm actually thinking about putting them onto my LS1 brakes this winter (since they make a bolt-on kit for the C5s, all I'd need is the C5 caliper bracket).

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

I guess it looks like I'll be upgrading the rotors and pads on my current LS1 set up . I'm basically happy with it any way, but craved the look of the 13" rotors taking up every bit of space in the wheels.

What should I do with the rear LT1 brakes???

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

If you really must have 13" rotors, LGMotorsports sells an adaptor bracket that will let you run C5 rotors on your LS1 brakes. As to the rear LT1 brakes, just leave them the way they are.

I tried to find those on their webpage, but I couldn't seem to find it. Do you have a link to the brackets??

Now thats an Idea! Do all the C5 Vetts use the same rotor or do I need a speciffic year.

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

They don't list them on the website, you'll have to call them directly. The last time I checked I think they were $200 or $300 for the pair of brackets.

All C5s use the same rotors.

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

Are these the same brackets used to mount the C5 calipers or are they just for the LS1 calipers?

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

Verify the C5 calipers will fit inside your rims before you purchase. Not at 17" rims have the same inside clearance.

Re: BAER track kit VS LS1 brakes

It seems like it would be more expensive to get brackets for the front and rear, new calipers, and new rotors for all 4 wheels doing the C5 conversion then to just get the baer track kit. Am i wrong? Somone know the actual pricing?
