Angry banging noise from underside of car

Hello everyone.. I have a 95 Camaro Z28 and have had a banging sound, which sounds like it's coming from underneath the car somewhere... and now seems to be getting worse over time. It seems to be coming from the rear side of the car, but not entirely sure. The car has 215,000 miles on it, and nothing in the suspension has ever been changed. I've changed the tranny mount multiple times, and it's fine right now. Everything seems ok with the exhaust, although I could be wrong. Sound seems to happen regardless of speed, but mostly goes away while accelerating. If I let go of the accelerator and let the car "cruise" it shows up really loud, hit the gas again it goes away or is very faint. Gets worse when going over a bumpy road

A co-worker mentioned it could be worn out shocks.. but I don't really know how to check that, or what the symtoms would be. The car still seems to handle ok and all...

I don't know what other kind of information you may need... it's really hard to describe the noise. ANY help would be appreciated, and thanks in advance!

Check your lower control arms, the bushings on my passenger side one went out and did the same thing your describing. With the car parked, shake the car back and forth from the top of each rear tire, youll be able to hear it(sometimes not all the time, depends on how the suspension has settled since the last time you drove it)

Re: banging noise from underside of car

also take a look at your u-joints. once they get old they can throw off the balance of the driveshaft resulting in a knocking/banging noise at crusing speeds. happened on my V6 just like you said it when i'd let off the accelerator it would make the noise. cheap for HD ones and easy to replace. have you checked the rear main seal? if theres a crack in the rubber and oil leaked out could be something in there..just a thought

Re: banging noise from underside of car

I realize this thread is a week old but...

I had almost exactly the same symptoms about a week ago. The rear sway bar had come loose.
