bigger brakes

what is the cheapest easiest way to get some bigger rotors. i just put c6 z06 wheels on the car, and now the stock brakes look even more pitiful. i just want alittle more from the brakes, mainly want the looks of bigger rotors w/ less rusting

Re: bigger brakes

if you had ls1 brakes on your car it would be a direct swap of the calipers, brackets and rotors. but looks like you have an lt1 car, so i'm not sure if it would still be a direct swap. i deal mostly with 3rd gens so you might do a search to see what people have done.

i know the list price for the c6 zo6 brakes from gm is around 1100 or so, but that is some bang for the buck as far as brakes are concerned.

good luck

EDIT: just noticed you have 17" fronts, which will not clear the c6 zo6 brakes. your best bet would be the c5 vette brakes for a cheaper swap then the ones offered by willwood and the like.

Re: bigger brakes

yup yup i've seen the brakets that you need to buy to make it fit "C5 brake conversion kit" its like $200, then would it be as easy as just buying the calipers pads and rotors from someone or directly from GM? if so what year corvette would i wanna search for? any c5? thats 97 to 04?

Unless his sig is incorrect C6 brakes will not fit his wheels. I'm assuming his 17" is front which is where the massive C6 rotors would go. He'd have to have 18's as a minimum up front to fit C6 crakes.

Re: bigger brakes

c6 will not fit unless you have 18s...

your best bet is the c5 conversion kit and the brackets(assuming you find them) cost about 300 bucks.

im really lookin into it.

Re: bigger brakes

Have you looked into the LS1 brake upgrade? It will be a definite improvement and you can get the complete conversion for under 200 bucks if you find the right person. I got the complete LS1 brake conversion assembly with new pads and rotors for 150 bucks from a board member who lives local to me.

Re: bigger brakes

Go with the C5 Z06 upgrade. See my webpage for pics. You can find the complete details over at the www.frrax.com site. Just search there, or ask for the part # list in the brake section.

Re: bigger brakes

I have the same wheels as you and I just upgraded to the Baer GT+ kit on my Z last week. It looks awesome and if money isn't an issue you should get them. I picked mine up brand new from a board member for $900 shipped. If that is not something you are interested in then just get the LS1 upgrade. You will need LS1 spindles and components but that stuff can be had for cheap.

Re: bigger brakes

the c5 brakes seem like the way to go, but what could possibly be done about the rear brakes? the vette brakes will look good on the front, but thats just the front. maybe just some zinc coated pads that wont rust as easy??

Re: bigger brakes

That would look good. On the back you have to stay with the same diameter rotor unless you want to fab or buy an extended caliper mounting plate. In the kit I got an extended mount that just replaced the original so when I put on the bigger rotor the caliper would be located correctly. If you wanted to get a bigger rotor just get the brackets from Baer or maybe someone else that makes them like Wilwood or something and then buy an OEM rear rotor that matches the size or their rotor. Probably a C4 or C5 rotor.

I have heard that the C6 brakes aren't very good. They chew up pads like no tomorrow. I haven't heard any issues with warping rotors tho. What kind of caliper do they come with? 2, 4, 6 piston, radial mount, etc?

Re: bigger brakes

6 piston mono-block on the zo6 model. the z51 style rotors have been known to crack under extreme conditions (autocross). they are the best bang for the buck brake upgrade that can be done at this time. when the aftermarket embraces this setup with new compounds of brake pads, it will make it that much better.

as soon as my tax return is deposited in my account (i know i waited till the last minute) i am going to order the brakes for my 85 t/a. then i will have to wait till i get my 18" wheels to install them.

good luck
