Bleeding Steering system?

Just replaced the Rack & pinion on my car today with a Cardone unit. After i started the car sounds like the power steering pump whines like crazy when i turn the wheel. Is it just air in the system? Do i just Crack a line off the rack then turn it?? Any ideas?

Re: Bleeding Steering system?

Bleeding procedure: Fill the reservoir to the cold mark. With the front wheels off the ground, start the engine and turn the steering wheel lock to lock, back and forth 20 times. Don't hold it at the extreme positions. Make sure fluid level doesn't run dry (it shouldn't but smart to have a friend watch). Shut the engine off, place the front wheels back on the ground, add fluid to bring it to the warm level (don't over fill).
