can I use sandpaper to take the glaze off of cross drilled rotors?
it is time for a brake job, I have kvr cross drilled rotors , all rotors have a slight groove in them and a glaze on them, they do not shake or anything like thatwhen stoping, I was thinking of using some sandpaper to scuff them up before installing the new pads, is sandpaper ok to use or should I use something else?

pring them to ... anywhere, say pep boys. have them put the rotors on the turner and use a disc grinder at a slow speed to take a few layers off. this way you get a new cross-cut in the process. i'd suggest not using the disc on the rotor unless you have it spinning at a constant speed...

so the disc grinder , is that somthing common ,will they know what I am talking about, is it a stone or somthing ( some of the places around here have morons working for them) thanks

if you dont want the grinder on it, tell them to use the steel wool pad, or use the wire brush thingy...but they'll know. its well known to do this to put the cross-hatch pattern (similar to new rotors) back onto freshly cut rotors. if you dont need them cut, but "resurvaced", you can just take the first layer or so off.

On the other hand if it were me I would probably to the sandpaper option and hope for the best. If you screw up you can always grind them (assuming you didn't screw up too bad).

No the holes will not hurt the machine or the tool in the machine, however considering they are grooved I was thinking they would most likely need turning to even out but if its shallow they would most likely resurface and put the cross hatch back on.

GM does not recomend turning the rotors for a pad replacement. You need scoring greater than 1/16" before even thinking about it.
If your rotors have a mirror polish from use, that is a good thing.
If you have ever had rotors turned, you would find out they are terrible until they polish smooth again. I mean terrible, it is like they have been greased.
Turning will just shorten the lifr of the rotor.
I don't think rotors can even glaze, perhaps lousy quality pads could.

I have. Try doing a 130-60 mph brake test. had small cracks all over the rotor and glazed them. They were a year old autozone replacements. Maybe that was why?
