clunking sound

whenever i'm backing up to the left, there is a clunk clunk sould coming from I think the front right. I'm not sure if it would do it if I were turning a different way, guess i'll try that tomorrow. does anyone know what that is and approximately how much to fix it?

Re: clunking sound

Have someone outside the car listen while you move it.

Re: clunking sound

I also have that problem, but it only seems to do it on cold days. and both directions (backing up left or right) not fowards. What suspension do you have? I have been told that it has something to do with the suspension. And I have had people listen from the outside, still no idea. I have had the ball joints looked at and those are good. I am not so sure that checking the tranny mount, torque arm and U-joints would have that kind of effect on the front steering joints.

Are you in the AF? Where?

Re: clunking sound

Is it like a "tink, tink" sound at slow speed turning? Sounds like something's binding briefly then releasing? Mine did that and I added GM friction modifier to the read end and it went away...In my case the clutches in the limited slip were binding slightly...

Re: clunking sound

Searched a year ago for something similar...clunking sound but from the rear only in reverse and a pop that you`d feel in the car along with the noise...in the end I ended up changing the diff oil and posi additive just to rule it out before I started spending serious money..it worked 44,000 miles on it when it started. Btw 97ss with an aurburn posi.
on a side note the trans (six speed) made some noises and I did the oil on it too with good results. I used the MTL from redline, good luck finding it

Re: clunking sound

You should also check the bushings in the front suspension. The lower control arm bushings usually go first.
