difference between spindles, hubs, & steering knuckles????

im hearing so much conflicting info!! im doing a C5 upgrade on my 96. so im having to go to LS1 stuff to make the conversion work.

some people are saying the steering knuckle is the same on 97&98 cars and all ill need is the spindles....

some are saying the hubs are identical....but arent the hubs a part of the spidle?

the guys @ LGmotorsports are saying that i need LS1 steering knuckles to use their brackets

what do i really need?

The hub... aka wheel hub... aka spindle assembly... is the round flange that holds the 5 lugs where you bolt the wheel/rotor to. The spindle hub assembly (did ya like that one? ) includes the wheel bearing (w/race) in the 4th gen's as it's all a modular unit (no more bearing packing!)... and also includes the ABS wheel sensor/connecter.

The back side of the hub fits into a circular hole in the steering knuckle and is secured to the knuckle with 4 strong bolts. These 4 bolts are the same as what is used by Bob Bishops brake brackets.

The steering knuckle is a cast-iron piece that connects to the tie rod end (for steering... hense the name) and connects to the upper and lower A-arms of the suspension in our cars.

The lower A-arm has a seat for the spring and shock mount, and of course has 2 pickup points on the chasis (K-member actually in this uni-body design), and one for the steering knuckle.

What you need for the LS1 brake upgrade is the LS1 version of the steering knuckle... the hubs themselves are identical and interchangeable, as are the ABS sensors contained within them. To go with C5 rotors (12.9" vs. 11.9" LS1 vs. 10.8" LT1) you obviously need to move the caliper ******d the same radial increase of the rotor to keep the caliper from rubbing... this is what brake brackets do.

LG Motorsport's brackets do not use the 4 hub bolts to mount bracket, but instead use more of an "adapter" plate design that bolts to the same spot an LS1 caliper normally would... but then puts holes farther away from center that the caliper can now bolt to.

Bob's system allows you to chop off the LS1 or LT1 mounting holes (and uses 4 bolts to secure the bracket), LG Motorsport's bracket requires the LS1 holes remain in place for their adapter plate to be mounted to.... that's why you NEED LS1 steering knuckles for their adapter but Bob's will fit either LT1 or LS1 knuckles.

I'm not sure if you need LS1 steering knuckles because I don't have any knowledge of their product. But to clear some other things up. The knuckles are different. The LT1 knuckles have these "ears" that are used to bolt the caliper to the knuckle. The hub is the same. And you can remove the hub from the steering knuckle. All you have to do is remove 4 bolts. The steering knuckles are the same on 93-97 cars, and they changed them in 98+ cars. The 98+ cars have dual piston calipers.
