DIY Lower control arms

i was wondering if anybody thinks it is a good idea to box in my LCA's myself, i am a good welder, if i leave them on the car and tack small spots at a time to prevent warping will that help any? trying stupid little stuff that will help but save money at the same time!! is it worth a shot to weld a piece of flat steel on there to stiffen it up a little?

Re: DIY Lower control arms

I did it but ended up ditching my old home made boxed ones because i wanted a some with poly bushings which is suppose to be the biggest help.

Re: DIY Lower control arms

SLP used to sell exactly what you are talking about. I have a set, just haven't gotten around to putting them on yet. I went over to BMR the other day and they will sell you poly bushings for the stock control arms if they are not stiff enough after welding. I think the reason most people don't go the welded route is because they are heavier than most of the after market LCA's.
SLP also used to sell a reinforced PHB made the same way. I have that also.

Re: DIY Lower control arms

stiffening up the arm itself is only half the cure...poly bushings will make it even better.

but the bushings are probably half the price of the aftermarket LCAs so it's a toss up.

Re: DIY Lower control arms

I'm doing that right now with a spare set of arms I got. I'll be installing poly bushings in them and wrapping the open area of the control arm with 3/16 steel. Might even get them powder coated.

Re: DIY Lower control arms

People have also welded a piece of 1" pipe into the chanel of the LCA. Sounds like a stonger route to me.

BMR el-cheap-o LCA's are like 80 bucks new if you look hard enough

not worth half-***'ing it with the modified stock pieces.

Re: DIY Lower control arms

My buddy got new lca's so i took his 70k mile arms and boxed them in. After installing them i really didn't notice too much of a difference. Like said before the poly bushings and relocation brackets are the biggest help.
