door panels.

Anyone know how to lighten up the doors, besides takin out the bars which i will do. I would like to know how to get the doors down to nothin but still have em open. Wolfe racecraft has something http://www.wolferacecraft.com/detail.aspx?ID=784

But im not sure how it goes on or if it takes off that much weight. Any ideas, thoughts, anyone do this yet? Or more? Thanks

Re: door panels.

I doubt many people here have gutted their doors. Some racing events, like the GM High-Tech Performance EFI shootouts for example, require full door panels.

Joe Overton got his Firebird down under 3,000# race weight. Try and send him a PM and find out how he did the doors.

Ask Wolfe how much their panel weighs, and compare it to your stock panel weight.

Re: door panels.

Joe Overton is running the wolfe door panels. I got rid of my door panels and will be fabbing up something similar to wolfes sometime before summer. I also put in manual window regulators, got rid of the door locks and all of the wiring. The door is alot lighter than it was before. The door panels are pretty heavy.

Re: door panels.

I didnt think the doors panels were all that heavy. I pulled mine, removed all the insulation and plastic, and just about everything not needed for racing. I'm thinking about converting to manual windows and ditching the power since there is no wiring in the doors anymore except for the window wiring. Once the stock door panels have been trimmed down I didnt think they were that heavy.

I bet that an aluminum panel is only a 3-4 lb reduction. If your hard core its worth it. I still race in events like the GM High Tech and the QTP EFI shootout's. I have to have door panels.

Re: door panels.

The GM shipping weight sheets show that the net weight increase for power windows is 2.7#.

The LS1Tech weight reduction thread shows the door panels as 20# (probably total for both) and 5# for the door crash bars (both??).

Re: door panels.

I'd say the door panels are 20 for both. I was told that both crash bars are total about 9 lbs so maybe thats 5lbs each.

My only thought of going to manual waindows is for an electrical standpoint. I have been on a mission this winter stripping out all non racing /function wiring from the car. Honestly I may have opened up Pandoras Box with it but I bet I have already tossed 50lbs of wiring. I started with the airbags and sensors and worked my way back from each device, then moved on to other things such as radio, HVAC, lighting, alarm, PDL's, trunk release, ABS and all related wiring, EBCM, and all related wiring to it, ect... I'm down to the end now I think but I dont have a motor in the car to tell if I cut something I shouldnt have.

Weight reduction is a funny thing, some people who dont care about anything can just ditch everything, but some like me who still run in certain events have to be cautious of what ya toss. In the end everything has a speciffic weight. Its just a matter of if you want to go thru with taking it out

Re: door panels.

If this is still your street driver you might appreciate having the door bars in there if you were to get t-boned.

There are still us race track drivers who still feel its just added protection and not worth the 5-10lbs. Even if I do have an 8pt bar...
