e-brake problems, what to go after?

I was driving the car a little hard the other day, and during the 1-2 shift, I heard a snap kinda sound from under and behind the console area. I didn't think much of it until I parked the car. The e-brake went up easier then normal. Ever since then it's been hard as hell to pull up, and I don't think it's disengauging fully. I have a terrible sence of smell so I can't really smell burning brakes. But I do know that if I drive the car for as little as a few minutes, I can hold my hand near either of the rear wheels and feel the heat coming off.

Does this mean I have snapped one of the e-brake cables? What else would cause this? I'm trying not to drive it much till I get it fixed but it is my only means of transportation.

2 quick suggestions if think they are stuck on. Look under the car and second, remove the back wheels and put the car in neutral with back end off the ground. If they are on, look at the connections for the cables.

However, since the cables pull the brakes on and springs pull them back chances are the brakes are not on the time.
