loose steering

lately i noticed my steering feels a little loose. it tends to jump a little when i hit bumps or hit a funny spot on the road. i got one tie rod end done cause it was bad for sure(should have done both at same time i know). i was wondering if the rack and pinion could be getting "loose" on me. if so what do ya think it would run to get it fixed. its really anoying.

Re: loose steering

what "jumps"? The steering column? Cause there are some bolts under the lower dash panel to tighten that.

The rack and pinion doesn't wear out perse, but could get some slack over time. I have an FE2 rack and pinion forsale if that is the case. The tie rods and ends should not be a huge factor in loose steering unless they are coming apart.

Re: loose steering

Jack the car up and have a friend turn the steering wheel back and forth while you inspect the steering linkage. My 95 had excessive play in the wheel; I discovered that the pinion gear was moving up and down in the steering rack. Replaced the rack, play was gone.

Re: loose steering

If it does turn out to be the rack and pinion...you should be able to get one from Autozone for approx $130 last I checked. Don't knowthe reliability or quality of their part though.
