LS1 REAR Brake upgrade need info

Hello,
A fairly reliable source of info told me in order to do the LS1 Rear brake upgrade on my 93 LT1, I will need to CHANGE the AXLES. Is that true???
I already have the brackets, rotors, calipers, e-brake cables, and misc hardware.
Thanks,
AL

You should be fine. I am doing the same thing you are with an LT1 rear. You need the LS1 backing plates but you already have those.

Re: LS1 REAR Brake upgrade need info

Sounds Great!
The rotors and emergency brake set up is different than the Stock rotor. The LS1 rotors uses a shoe type set up for the e-brake on the back of the rotor and the disc caliper provides the rear brake. It is a superior set up over the stock LT1 e-brake. I was not sure if there would be some kind of axle clearance problem?

Re: LS1 REAR Brake upgrade need info

The LS1 axles are about 1/8" different length than LT1 axles. I think the LS1 ones are shorter but I can't remember for sure. Some people seem to have problems using the LT1 axles and some don't. I had them so I used the LS1 axles. If I hadn't already had them I would have just used the LT1 ones.

Re: LS1 REAR Brake upgrade need info

Wow,
That could make a difference! Since the rotor attaches to the axle hub, it could throw the alignment off. Maybe I'll hunt for some LS1 rear axles before I start. I'm on vacation and I was going to install them today. I think I'll wait now.
Appeciate the information,
AL

I have heard it both ways, I also heard that shimming can resolve any issues.

Re: LS1 REAR Brake upgrade need info

Shimming an interesting idea, and maybe a decent way to correct it.
Thanks,

Shimming would be a much cheaper way to fix, rather than getting new axles. I need to find out whether my axles are shorter or longer for sure before I start. I have all the other parts painted and ready to install. I also could use a good pic of the e- brake set up showing the position of the cable bracket because the whole emergency brake dealt is completely different than my stock LT1.
