QA1 gen F coil over conversion for custom spring rates
im sure everyone knows about the QA1 coilover kit for the 4th gen f bodies, they come in 2 flavours. the road strut and the drag strut. i was doing some research and called QA1 with my issue in making a handling solution out of the coilover kit they supply. as they only offer 3 spring rates which are all soft.
275# drag
300# mix
325# which they call their handling ones.
all rates are linear.
i just got off the phone with their tech guy and he informed me there is a conversion for the gen f strut they offer for our cars that allows you to use a std. 2.5" ID 12" spring with a conventional spring retainer on the top. as the kit origionally uses the factory perch which is smaller, not allowing a std coilover spring to fit, limiting you origionally to the 3 choices provided. this conversion now allows you to use and customize exactly what spring rate you wish to run in the front now.
new part numbers are:
SS112SDM - the gen f conversion mount for the coil over to use std. coils
9018-101 - the upper spring cap
then you can order any 2.5" ID 12" coil spring to fit your needs in spring rate. available in 25lb/in increments up to 600 lb/in now and have a 12 way adj. system with full ride height adjustability now with some real spring rates for handling.
i was thinking about doing the 4 corner coilover, with 500# fronts and 150# rears with the SA 12 ways all around, what do ya guys think?

500# Fronts
That front spring rate sure sounds stiff to me for coilovers.
I know different gen cars different as to front wieght.
I'm running the Art Morrison front coil over in my 87 Iroc
and had the chance to try 3 different spring rates in mine
before deciding. tried 250-200 and finally decided on 175#.
The first two were way to stiff. The 175#s I'm running now
really hold the car up at speeds in the turn. Takes two or
three people pushing on the corner to even start to move
it. Also running the Koni 3 way adjustable struts and have
it set to the softest setting.
Outboard strut location on the LCA also a factor. The further out you mount the softer spring you need.
Just curious as 500# front getting close to HD OEM spring
location rates.

Grant you, am lite up front, no AC, Glass hood, Battery rear, and,
a few other delete items but it is what it is.
H-ll, am looking at the invoice.

Here are a LOT of coil-over options.
http://www.pitstopusa.com/SearchResu...ategoryID=1195
And here are a LOT of spring rates for the front
http://www.pitstopusa.com/SearchResu...ategoryID=3493
And for the rear

or

Don't be fooled. This is not rocket science.

yes, and you should know the f body upper spring perch for a coil over isnt standard 2.5" id so a regular coil spring wont fit like the ones you posted. you need to get the upper conversion to the strut, then you can use a std 2.5" id spring any rate is now available due to this. gen F QA1 coilovers dont accept the regular spring normally limiting you to 3 choices, it wont fit into the car like i explained at the top of this thread...

Notice a threaded collar that slips over the shock barrel, a lower spring perch that threads onto the collar to adjust ride height and an upper spring mount that has a tapered top
Using the collar and the upper spring mount, a 2.5" spring will work still using the stock upper perch. The upper spring perch pictured fits into the stock rubber mount very nicely.
I have 2.5" Eibach ... 8" free length on my 96 CMC Firebird. I have 4 different spring rates, depending upon which track I run at. I can change front springs in about 60 minutes.

wow, apparently you dont know "rocket science very well" or reading, i explained this in my FIRST POST and regarding QA1 coilovers which this has nothing to do with. this is a QA1 coilover fix, stop being a ***** and contribute to the thread instead of being a ****. i provided a fix for QA1 guys to use, i didnt ask you to post a bunch of STD 2.5" id spring links and go ROCKET SCIENCE

Mitch, that pic you posted...I see them for Monroe, Afco, Carrere, Pro shocks, Bilstein, but not QA1. Did you post the wrong pic? There are perches for QA1 coilovers that allow the use of 2.5" id springs, but its a few pages further on the link. Maybe I'm wrong, please let me know.
