Rack and Pinion Clunk?

I was doing a general inspection on the front end of the Camaro yesterday, and I found that I have a clunk coming from the driver's side of the rack and pinion. The tie rod is okay, and there isn't any play, but when you move the wheel back and forth, there is a definite clunk coming from the driver's side, and I can feel it as well (by hold the tie rod arm and having the wife move the wheel slightly). I'm just curious to know if anyone else has had this problem and if there is a resolution other than replacing the whole unit.

It is rebuildable but my recollection is there are some special tools required that you may not be able to substitute very well. I will check the manual. You can get a reman unti from rock auto for $175 dollars (for the 2-3/4 lock to lock, $160 for 2-1/4 turn). The repair kit is $25 (seals, etc) but if it is gear or something else, you would need that as well. Not sure how much you would end up saving dollar wise rebuilding it yourself but there is a lot of old world charm to $175 for a direct bolt-in.

I had a clunk; had my friend turn the wheel back and forth with the front up on jack stands and me observing down below. I was able to see the pinion gear move in and out about a 1/4";not supposed to do that! Replaced the rack with a rebuilt unit and clunk was gone!

After looking at prices, I can get a rack for $170 (plus $100 core), so I will go that route.
I did check the rack itself, and the mounts are good.
