Unhappy Replacing front cross member

My son centered a new manhole on a road last night that was sticking up about 7 inches. It severly bent the lower cross member. Has anyone changed this out with one from a junk yard?? It does not look to hard but I might be missing something. If only the bottom of the cross member is bent and the front end will align, is this even worth changing out??? It is bent in about .75 inches deep by 18 inches wide. This was in a new residential district, do you think the city should be responsible for these repairs?????

I'm guessing you are talking about the K member. What the engine sits on. If you want to upgrade, look at a tubular K member. They are not hardto replace. Just need to be able to support the motor from above. As far as the city, yeah, I would raise some hell.

Re: Replacing front cross member

If it doesn't present a ground clearance issue and the car aligns properly, then it sounds like it doesn't need to be replaced. I would inspect the damage thoroughly to make sure it didn't damage the steering rack mounts, brake lines, smog pump injection tube, etc.

Re: Replacing front cross member

If the car alighns properly, provides no scraping issues, and no other parts were damaged, then I agree with OBE.

If there is damage, I won't lie.. it would be a pain to replace. Even if you have the lift, cherrypicker and the time to do it right, it's still unpleasant.

I think a tubular k-member would be overkill in this situation.

Re: Replacing front cross member

I replaced 2 stock K members with BMR tubular K members; it's a straight forward swap if you have access to an engine hoist to hold the motor in place while your drop the K member. This is assuming that the impact to your damaged K member didn't bend your front subframe.
