If you decide on a DOT 5 make sure you flush out everything really well. It's not compatible w/ DOT 3 or 4. IMO it's completely unnecessary anyway. Running a DOT 5 on your braking system would be like hooking up a 9" to a Honda Civic. Just make sure everything is working properly and then look at your options from there.

The reason Stoptech does not like DOT 5 fluid is the probably the same reason you will not see many race teams use it. As DOT 5 fluid heats up it expands and makes the braking unpredictable. Most of you will not like hearing this but FORD over the counter brake fluid is one of the best fluids available. It is rated as a DOT 3 but has the boiling point of a DOT 4 fluid. They created this fluid for the crownvics, well actually the older drivers who like to left foot brake. Ford ran into problems with these vehicles with the older customers who left there foot on the brake which caused them to overheat (boil) standard DOT 3 fluid. The only benefit you will get from DOT 5 is it will not suck in the moisture if left open. If you are looking for better pedal feel you will want to make sure the rear drums are adjusted, use a good quality pad, and probably switch to stainless braided hoses.

I heard Ford fluid was good, but people have turned away from it since they started putting it in plastic containers.

Re: What can I do to make my brakes work better?

Thanks all for the help. Is there a guide somewhere to show me how to flush out the brake system so I can put new fluid in it and bleed it and all that? Like I said, I've never had to mess with the brakes before so I really don't know what I would be doing.

Cheap fix IMO would be to replace the rotors, upgrade to some performance friction pads (autozone has them), and change out the brake fluid. For the money, thats probably going to help you out the most.

If you really want a difference, you should upgrade the whole system to a higher piston caliper. But thats gonna cost some $
