97 V6 Tranny probs? Hesitation - Please help!
Hey all,
Having problems with the auto tranny in my 97 Camaro.
History:
7/02 - Replaced transmission with rebuilt unit due to hard shifting and
slipping. 65K miles
12/02 - Replaced burnt out sparkplug wires again
7/03 - 79k miles - Rebuilt trans is now having problems when hot.(approx
15-20 min highway driving.) Outside temp 90-95 degrees). A/C maxed. Car is
now "bucking/hesitating" or "hunting for a gear". Seems to be most problematic from
2nd-D or D - OD when the trans it set to overdrive. However, If I shift the car
"manually" though the gears: 1,2,D,OverD it is OK. Auto shop that replaced
trans last year checked it out. They said there are no engine codes or
tranny codes showing up.
Had trans flushed and filter changed. Did not help. Any thoughts? Thanks!

Well you did buy a used trans. Not only that, a good rebuild cost slightly less than a new trans. you pay for what you get especially considering the 4L60 and 4L60E both were not exactly the strongest trannys in the world. Very problem prone. A lot of times for even a 700-800 trans rebuild , a lot of shops will cut serious concers. You need to replace it all or get a new trans if you want it to stand up over time.

You have a point, but i wouldnt call it a design FLAW. Its more of a "Designed Flaw" by GM, just like the plastic headlight gears in firebirds and vettes and the opti spark in LT1s. The 4L60 and 4L60E in my opinion are garbage, and GM knew it. There older transmissions like the 700R4 and Turbo 400 had a lot less problems.
I know damn well GM could have made a stronger trans, headlight motors that work for the life of the car, and a hotter ignition that would die like optis.
Thats just one more thing to deal with when you get a 4th gen.

My transmission needs a rebuild too. It doesn't go into drive from reverse all that good. My mechanic said it would cost about $1600-2000 I'm gunna use this problem to my advantage so I can sell my car for more than I got it and beg my parents for a nice 98-02 LS1!
